I heard this song on the radio while driving home the other night. Here’s the Wikipedia article on The Highwaymen supergroup. Like some other songs I really like—for example, “Wichita Lineman,” “Galveston,” “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” and “MacArthur Park”—this song was written by Jimmy Webb. Just thought I’d share 🙂
I am a college professor at Milwaukee School of Engineering, where I teach literature, film studies, political science, and communication. I also volunteer with a Milwaukee homeless sanctuary, Repairers of the Breach, as chair of the Communications and Fund Development Committee.
all those tunes bring back alot of memories…. I recall Willie Nelson in his early career wearing a
black suit and tie with a white dress shirt and very short hair…. viewed on a black and white TV..
It must have been in the sixties…. my dad watched all those grand ole opry and shows like Porter Wagoner show with his sidekick Dolly Parton when country & western was Country.
Oh, Porter Wagoner! I also remember him with Dolly Patton doing TV commercials for Breeze laundry detergent. Remember those? There was a towel in every box? I can’t image it was a very large towel . . .
Must have been in those extra large boxes of detergent…. Do you remember what
they looked like? ie print or solid color? Those were the days of gimmicky sales to get the consumer to purchase their products. I remember when Prell shampoo had their pearl
necklaces which I still have. Either my mom or grandma sent in for it? They must have
had to send in one or multiple label(s) off the bottle. When I was a kid my aunts would talk about getting dishes during the depression. As they say “those were the days”
I never actually saw a towel outside of the TV commercials. I remember all the gimmicks you mention. And I remember one of my students told me that the thing that started her off as reader was getting a Harlequin Romance novel shrink wrapped with a bottle of fabric softener.
I remember seeing that offer on the super market shelf. I wonder now if that is how my mother ‘n law started reading those books? LOL Getting back to the highwaymen…. I thought of the Traveling Willerby’s today…Bob Dylan, Geo Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison etc group like the
Highway Men
I love all those too!!! 🙂
